Diamond Quality Factors

Diamonds are often graded for their quality before they are sold as the quality will affect their pricing. It is usually graded by their colour, clarity, cut and carat. These quality factors are more commonly known as the 4Cs of a diamond.

Colour

A diamond’s colour is essentially evaluated by its absence of colour. Following the GIA diamond colour-grading system, the degree of colour ranges from D (colourless) to Z (faint or light yellow).

Clarity

Natural diamonds are formed deep within the Earth’s crust when carbon is exposed to tremendous heat and pressure, causing the occurrence of imperfections within the diamond during the formation. Clarity is the assessment of imperfections known as blemishes on the surface and inclusions within a diamond. Clarity can be determined by the type, number, and size of these inclusions when viewed under 10x magnification.

The cut of a diamond is often thought of as the shape of the stone itself. However, it is in fact referring to the ability of a diamond to refract light to produce brilliance and fire up through to the table and crown. Precise workmanship will be required to ensure that a diamond is trimmed to maximise its brilliance and fire.
